What Is MP3

Monday, 24. January 2011

During these years, “mp3″ term has become very famous, offline and also when we listen to music online , but do we really know the meaning behind this well known word?

MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 Audio Layer 3 (or III), more commonly referred to as MP3, is a patented digital audio encoding format using a form of lossy data compression. It is a common audio format for consumer audio storage, as well as a de facto standard of digital audio compression for the transfer and playback of music on digital audio players.

MP3 is an audio-specific format that was designed by the Moving Picture Experts Group as part of its MPEG-1 standard and later extended in MPEG-2 standard.

The first MPEG subgroup – Audio group was formed by several teams of engineers at Fraunhofer IIS,University of Hannover, AT&T-Bell Labs, Thomson-Brandt, CCETT, and others.

The use in MP3 of a lossy compression algorithm is designed to greatly reduce the amount of data required to represent the audio recording and still sound like a faithful reproduction of the original uncompressed audio for most listeners.

An MP3 file that is created using the setting of 128 kbit/s will result in a file that is about 11 times smaller than the CD file created from the original audio source. An MP3 file can also be constructed at higher or lower bit rates, with higher or lower resulting quality.

The compression works by reducing accuracy of certain parts of sound that are considered to be beyond the auditory resolution ability of most people. This method is commonly referred to as perceptual coding. It uses psychoacoustic models to discard or reduce precision of components less audible to human hearing, and then records the remaining information in an efficient manner.

While MP3 has become a standard, there are many that still prefer original recordings with no compression. When performing lossy audio encoding, such as creating an MP3 file, there is a trade-off between the amount of space used and the sound quality of the result. Typically, the creator is allowed to set a bit rate, which specifies how many kilobits the file may use per second of audio. The higher the bit rate, the larger the compressed file will be, and, generally, the closer it will sound to the original file.

With too low a bit rate, compression artifacts (i.e. sounds that were not present in the original recording) may be audible in the reproduction. Some audio is hard to compress because of its randomness and sharp attacks. When this type of audio is compressed, artifacts such as ringing or pre-echo are usually heard. A sample of applause compressed with a relatively low bit rate provides a good example of compression artifacts.

The Music Industry In 2011

Monday, 24. January 2011

Music Industry means Music Biz! Anything behind compositions, recording and performances of music. In the late 19th century and early 20th century, the music industry was dominated by the publishers of sheet music. By mid-century records had supplanted sheet music as the largest player in the music business: in the commercial world people began speaking of the recording industry as a loose synonym of the music industry.

This is an important period. If you can’t have access to a recording studio, you can’t be a musician, and a studio with all the keyboards, sounds and effects was very very expensive.

Since 2000, sales of recorded music have dropped off substantially, while live music has increased in importance. Four major corporate labels dominate recorded music, Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI – each of which consists of many smaller companies and labels serving different regions and markets.

What’s happening now? Thanks to technology, a studio can be much less expensive than in the past and be effective at the same time. While keyboards can be expensive like in the eighties, computer synths sound wonderful and their cost is much less.

Music Biz is much more than this, of course. The music industry itself comprises various players, including individuals, companies, trade unions, not-for-profit associations, rights collectives, and other bodies. Professional musicians, including band leaders, rhythm section members, musical ensembles, vocalists, conductors, composers/arrangers, and sound engineers create sound recordings of music or perform live in venues ranging from small clubs to stadia. Occasionally professional musicians negotiate their wages, contractual conditions, and other conditions of work through Musicians’ Unions or other guilds. Composers and songwriters write the music and lyrics to songs and other musical works, which are sold in print form as sheet music or scores by music publishers.

Music Biz is expanding. It’s time to listen to music online right away and check yourself. In 2011 there will be even more music that in the last years. Technology helps talents to show their skills to anyone thanks to the Internet. This can bring important contracts from labels, or just good audience from anywhere in the world, which is anyway not bad at all.

Loudspeakers And Quality Music In 2011

Monday, 24. January 2011

A loudspeaker or speaker is an electroacoustic transducer that converts an electrical signal into sound. The speakers are very important if you want to listen to music online.

The speaker moves in accordance with the variations of an electrical signal and causes sound waves to propagate through a medium such as air or water. After the acoustics of the listening space, loudspeakers (and other electroacoustic transducers) are the most variable elements in a modern audio system and are usually responsible for most distortion and audible differences when comparing sound systems.

If you are an hi-fi enthusiast, I’m sure you’ve being present at many friends competitions where you have to show and explain the quality of your personal loudspeaker system and compare it to your friends ones.

To adequately reproduce a wide range of frequencies, most loudspeaker systems employ more than one driver (individual transducer), particularly for higher sound pressure level or maximum accuracy. Individual drivers are used to reproduce different frequency ranges. The drivers are named subwoofers (for very low frequencies); woofers (low frequencies); mid-range speakers (middle frequencies); tweeters (high frequencies); and sometimes supertweeters, optimized for the highest audible frequencies.

There are infinite debates about which transducers are the most important, many think they are the woofers because the prominence of the low frequencies in many music styles and applications.

The terms for different speaker drivers also differ, depending on the application. In two-way systems there is no mid-range driver, so the task of reproducing the mid-range sounds falls upon the woofer and tweeter. Home stereos use the designation “tweeter” for the high frequency driver, while professional concert systems may designate them as “HF” or “highs”. When multiple drivers are used in a system, a “filter network”, called a crossover, separates the incoming signal into different frequency ranges and routes them to the appropriate driver.

Synthesizers, Why We Love Them!

Monday, 24. January 2011

There’s a revival of all kind of synthesizers, lately. Used widely during the 80s, they are back again in many different music styles, commercials, business spots, dance music and also film music.

A Synthesizer is an electronic musical instrument that uses filters and tone generators to create waveforms which are then processed to generate sound. Modern synthesizers can closely reproduce the sound of some instruments, but many keyboard players use them for their characteristic sound.

Synths can reproduce a real instrument, adding a special “flavour”, I can say “music spice”, with harmonics and overdrive methods. Can create also instruments from the scratch, totally new, sound ideas that were in the creator’s mind only. This is done using special algorithms.

Synthesizers use a number of different technologies or programmed algorithms, each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Among the most popular waveform synthesis techniques are subtractive synthesis, additive synthesis, wavetable synthesis, frequency modulation synthesis, phase distortion synthesis, physical modeling synthesis and sample-based synthesis. Other sound synthesis methods, like subharmonic synthesis or granular synthesis, are not found in music synthesizers.

Synthesizers are often controlled with a piano-style keyboard, leading such instruments to be referred to simply as “keyboards”. Several other forms of controller have been devised to resemble violins, guitars and wind-instruments. Synthesizers without controllers are often called “modules”, and they can be controlled using MIDI.

While we are accustomed to see synth players using keyboards, did you ever see midi violins or flutes playing synth modules? Absolutely amazing. The wonder of synth lives in the magic of its creation, the infinite ways of creating a new sound. Are you curious? Just search in the main web engines and preview the best synth music. Listen to music online! Internet has infinite playlists as well, with many independent musicians that just want to be found to show you their talent.

An Article About Technological Developments And Voice Recognition Software Features

Thursday, 20. January 2011

Perhaps you’ve heard about something similar to voice recognition software that lets you to talk to your computer by converting speech to text. These concepts have been in use for over fifty years.

As technological developments have increased the power of voice recognition techniques. Now, computers can do a wide range of things including converting continuous speech, hearing more than one voice at once in addition to having multi language support.

There are three main ways that voice recognition technology can address your specific needs. Dictation, command and control along with text to speech.

With the advancements in technology, your voice works like an input device. When you speak a command, you can talk yourself through menus, toolbars while activating various applications. Additionally, you can dictate words through your microphone and the computer can convert them into text.

Accessing certain text to speech features that are found, computers use voice recognition that will allow it to speak back text that was typed. By using synthesizers that produce sounds similar to speech, it also uses filters that imitate sound variations from advanced movements such as mouth and tongue position as well as the length of the throat among a variety of other things.

Even though this kind of technology allows a computer to recognize and digitize speech from words, analyze the words and then create speech from texts, the computer still will not get what you are actually saying. Getting a computer to understand exactly how people actually speak involves areas of artificial intelligence that is called natural language processing.

It is true that speech and voice recognition technology came a long since its inception, it hasn’t achieved a hundred percent reliability. Even with the best software on the market, it has not been able to compensate for little things like typing accuracy and working through mistakes.

While there are continuous efforts to make this technology that will overcome these short comings, a large and diverse range of people use it in its current form. People from students to physically disabled users rely on the advancements. At this rate, there is a very good chance that in just a few years, keyboards may no longer be necessary.
